Program Outline - "SOFT SKILLS"
Delta Partnership - The Boeing Company
Steve Sargent – 3/1/99
This is a program outline designed initially for Red Mountain High School, MPS. It was delivered to all RMHS seniors this year and last year. It is targeted at seniors that will be entering the workforce after high school graduation. It is also for the students that may dropout or are considering such a future. Students that know they are going to college need to be aware of these "soft skills" when they ultimately enter the workforce. The Delta Partnership is targeting the program for all MPS seniors. It will be placed on the Delta Partnership WEB (
http://aztec.asu.edu/k12/htic/dp/) page as a "Best Practice" to be applied elsewhere.
The one-hour program starts with a product video, 3 to 5 minutes long. After the video, the items listed below are discussed from the employer's viewpoint. Then the questions are asked to stimulate student interactions.
"THE LITTLE THINGS"
"Your lives are about to change, like a caterpillar into a butterfly. No longer are you the product of your parents and High School systems, your apprentice adults. You will now be asked to supply a service to your employer on their terms. How well prepared are you for this task?" Consider the following:
1. ATTENDANCE
2. SKILLS
3. TEAM WORK
4. ATTITUDE
5. APPEARANCE
6. COMMUNICATIONS
7. ETHICAL BEHAVIOR
After the presentation, an open discussion with all of the students, asking items listed below is initiated:
The program is concluded with a summarization of the presentation and appropriate "challenges" to the students.
