S.E.E.K.
Science * Experimentation * Exploration* Knowledge*
Red Mountain Ranch Elementary School first began S.E.E.K. 4 years ago as a brainchild of the Math and Science Journey School team though the state department. We wanted to find a way to excite boys and girls about science and incorporate parent volunteers into the process. In 1995, a grant was written and awarded for over $5.OO0 that funded a team of 14 teachers to write and gather mini science lessons that would be activity based not sit and lecture type of lessons, but hands on! We organized them the next year into grade level lessons and created enough to have a minimum of one lesson every other week for the entire year. The following year1 the lessons were organized into kits.
Questions Volunteers Ask..![]()
You teach every other week for about 15-20 minutes
The lessons are housed in grade level binders that each teacher has in his or her classroom. They are in no particular order and stand-alone. They may or not be related to the grade level curriculum, depending what each grade level wanted. Binders may be in your possession while you are preparing lessons.
If you have more than one volunteer per class, and more than half of our classrooms do, you will want to copy lessons out of the binders, so you can take them home. You may want to select a class coordinator and have only one person assigned lessons and the dates, or you may want to meet with all of the same classroom volunteers and break up the lessons for the entire year.
The first thing that you will want to do is contact your child's teacher to set up a time schedule and see if there are any particular lessons that he or she a certain time. You will want to ask for the lesson binder. You will want to set a certain day of the week for a certain time, so the teacher can schedule you into the daily lesson plans. Once you have a tentative schedule set...you are ready to start!
Organization of S.E.E.K. ![]()
Lets get started!
Most lessons have the materials housed in big green tubs in the science closet located in the multipurpose room. A key is available in the S.E.E.K. cupboard in the teachers' workroom or from the classroom teacher. There are also lessons available from a kit entitled "World in Motion" developed and supplied by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
Some materials, like paper, glue, or paper clips, the teacher may have right in his or her classroom. But if you find something unusual that is needed for a lesson, like newspapers or a brown paper bag, please ask your teacher if a supply is available. You may request the students to bring the supply. We have a form developed that tells parents that a certain supply is needed, that you will be teaching a lesson, and that you need a donation in your S.E.E.K. lesson book.
We have used most of the grant monies to purchase tubs and supplies, but we do have some left for your expenditures. Before making a purchase, please check the S.E.E.K. supply shelf, request student donations, or call Linda our parent aide, to see if the supply is available. If none of these avenues work, then feel free to purchase what you need, save the receipt1 and turn it into the S.E.E.K. mail box with your name and child's room number on it, and Linda Dorsch will refund you the money.
The S.E.E.K. Program WANTS TO IMPROVE EACH YEAR! Please feel free to write notes and add to each kit! Any supplies that you can add to the kit will be greatly appreciated. However, please do not leave anything that would need to be refrigerated or that may spoil the kits.
Things to Remember ![]()
·
Be organized....plan ahead!Try the lesson at home to see how long it takes and to make sure you have all needed materials.
·
Keep to your time schedule! If you need to be absent, tell your teacher. If you need to reschedule, tell your teacher. If you need a longer period of time, then ask your teacher if it is all right... you may need to break a longer lesson into two segments.Feel free to direct questions to
